         SHORT GUIDE

The importance of housing and of the cultural, social, economic and ecological contexts for residential building are obvious: in the 21st century, the quality of housing is becoming increasingly important in a flexible society, with new forms of superimposed living and working situations. The traditional small-family model of a middle-class and industrial society is dissolving. Many new forms of household and residential styles are calling previous principles of design and administration into question. Regional and global inequalities in the distribution and usage of resources now have a shaping influence on the supply of accommodation. Industrial and commercial districts that are becoming vacant are providing an opportunity to redefine residential building and the quality of the residential environment. Postwar housing estates call for intelligent, sustainable renovation strategies. Models for low-price accommodation for the urban middle classes are needed.

In the MAS ETH in Housing, interdisciplinary housing issues are explored in relevant thematic areas, linked to the master’s degree thesis, and examined from architectural, sociological, cultural-history, and regional planning and land use viewpoints.

Our goal is to train architects and graduates from related fields to become critical experts in the socially relevant market segment of housing. The programme is directed by architect Prof. Dietmar Eberle and housing researcher Dr. Marie Glaser. More than 80 students from Europe and overseas have so far participated and form a lively alumni-network.

For further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely
Dietmar Eberle and Marie Glaser
